The Five Steps To Lasting Weight Loss

By Russ Howe

As a fitness instructor I know that there is one area where most gym users are completely confused. That area, of course, is how to lose weight. Make no mistake about it, whether you are aiming for lasting fat loss or even trying to figure out how to build muscle you will come across a few simple rules which are proven to work.

The following steps are proven and very, very effective not only when it comes to removing unwanted body fat but also when it comes to keeping it off in future.

So, are you ready to begin?

The following 5 steps are all you really need when it comes to dieting, these are the foundations of a solid lifestyle.

1) Understand Your Calories

2) Up Your Protein When Cutting Carbs

3) Snack On Protein Rich Food

4) Snack Tubs Rule

5) Take A Break Every Sunday

We will now run through some of these rules in more depth to help you get the most from them. The first of which revolves around simply understanding a little bit about the calories you eat. No, you do not need to watch every single calorie or skip your favorite meals. That's actually a bad way to diet. When you are dieting effectively you shouldn't even feel like you are dieting. You must operate at a calorie deficit, meaning eat less per day than you do now, that's a solid start.

When we diet we tend to hear all kinds of bad things about carbohydrates and therefore we like to cut down the number of carbs we eat. That's fine, it will help your progress, but you need to do it correctly. Don't just drop all the carbs from your diet. Cut down if you want but ensure you still get some in your system every day and ensure you increase your protein intake, too.

Rules three and four cover snacking. The most common reason for people failing time and time again when it comes to weight loss is their inability to stop snacking through boredom. Usually, hunger strikes when you're at work and don't have any healthy food around you.

Take a few small tubs with you to work, pack them with protein rich foods and enjoy them throughout the day whenever you feel peckish. Protein has far less impact on our fat storage cells than either carbs or fat, so enjoy!

On to the last rule, which is probably the most misunderstood. There is a common tendency for people who are dieting to feel the need to punish themselves by cutting out all of their favorite foods. Where does this lead them? Failure. They fall off the rails two months in and pile the weight straight back on. Take a designated day off each week and you'll avoid this pitfall.

So if you fall into the group of people desperately trying to figure out how to lose weight effectively you now have a strong foothold to get moving from. If you're trying to learn how to build muscle we'll have another post for you coming up soon.
